Meet Garrett
Candidate for Detroit Police Commissioner
Garrett Burton is public defender at the Michigan State Appellate Defender Office. There, he provides high-quality, holistic appellate defense to indigent people convicted of felonies. Garrett has won cases in courts all across the state—from Wayne County's 3rd Circuit Court to the Michigan Supreme Court. At SADO, he chairs a task force on racial justice litigation, serves on the Michigan State Bar Association's Access to Justice subcommittee, and belongs to UAW Local 2200.
Before Garrett was a lawyer, he worked for State Senate Stephanie Chang and Detroit City Council Member Raquel Castañeda-López. He also sits on the United Community Housing Coalition's board of directors.
Garrett lives in Detroit's Woodbridge neighborhood. He is the president of the Woodbridge Citizens' Council, the neighborhood's resident association. While with the WCC, Garrett has organized steering wheel club giveaways, coordinated snow removal for seniors, and overseen the council's monthly meeting. He also plays for the Woodbridge F.C. soccer team.
Garrett graduated from the University of Michigan Law School. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in public policy from the University of Michigan.
